Our Philosophy
At Puhoi Valley our indulgent food reflects our belief that food made with care, to taste good, feeds the body and lifts our spirits. Our food makes us who we are.
Wherever possible we source our product locally, from the valley, from the region and from New Zealand.
While the outcomes of our labours are deliciously indulgent, with interesting and unique tastes & textures, we use simple ingredients as our starting point, always. Like milk, cream and fruit.
We love our food, it excites us and rewards us. We want to celebrate and share our enjoyment and passion for great food with more New Zealanders just like you.
Our History
Puhoi was settled in 1863 by Bohemians. The offer of free land was the motivation for 83 emigrants to settle on the other side of the world. After clearing the land they established themselves as farmers and still continue to do so today.
European traditions continue at Puhoi with European style cheeses made at the Puhoi Valley Cheese Company. The factory, nestled in the upper reaches of the picturesque Puhoi Valley, was originally a goat farm.
In 1983 a small manufacturing plant was built to convert goats’ milk into ice cream powder and camembert. It wasn’t long before the factory diversified into making cheese from cows’ milk and broadened the product range to include feta.
The Puhoi Valley Cheese Company has expanded to now bring premium cheeses to all New Zealanders including camembert, brie, feta, blue and other European products such as ricotta.
The company employs more than 60 people some of whom are descendants of the original Bohemian settlers from the Tolhopf, Bayer and Turnwald families.
